RBI rules: read the RBI guidelines on loan settlement and recovery
  • Already in force: lenders and recovery agents must not call you for overdue loans before 8 AM or after 7 PM
  • Credit report correction not done within 30 days of your complaint? You get ₹100 for each day of delay
  • Recovery agents must not threaten, humiliate or harass you, your relatives, friends or co-workers
  • From 1 Jan 2027, banks must also tell you the recovery agency’s details at least one day before its first visit
  • From 1 Jan 2027, banks must list their recovery agencies on their website
  • Lenders agree settlements under their own Board-approved policy; it is not an automatic right
  • After a compromise settlement, lenders wait at least 12 months before lending to you again (non-farm loans)
  • No reply from your bank in 30 days, or unhappy with it? You can complain to the RBI Ombudsman at cms.rbi.org.in

HDFC Bank Loan Settlement: Loans, Cards and the 3-Level Complaint Route

HDFC Bank issues both its loans and its credit cards, so one grievance route covers both. This guide explains how to ask HDFC Bank about a payment plan or settlement, how its three complaint levels work and when you can go to the RBI Ombudsman. HDFC Bank decides any settlement under its own policy; there is no fixed percentage.

You decide every step

When people look for HDFC Bank loan settlement

  • Your HDFC Bank loan EMIs or credit card dues are too heavy to pay each month
  • You have missed payments and are getting reminder or recovery calls
  • You want to ask HDFC Bank for a payment plan or loan settlement, but do not know how to start
  • You want to complain about how your account or a recovery call was handled

HDFC Bank complaint steps (from the bank's own pages)

  • Level 1 – customer-facing channels. Branch, email, letter, PhoneBanking, your relationship manager, or the online complaint form. HDFC Bank asks for up to 10 working days to resolve a Level 1 complaint.
  • Level 2 – Grievance Redressal Cell. Contact the Grievance Redressal Officer by the toll-free number, the online form, or a letter. Keep your earlier complaint number ready.
  • Level 3 – Principal Nodal Officer. If Level 2 does not resolve it, write to the Principal Nodal Office. Again quote your complaint number.
  • Then the RBI Ombudsman. HDFC Bank's page says you may approach the Ombudsman if the issue is unresolved after the three levels, or if you get no reply within 30 days.

What is specific to HDFC Bank

HDFC Bank also publishes a page listing the RBI Ombudsman offices. Use it with the RBI complaint portal if you need to escalate.

About HDFC Bank credit cards

HDFC Bank issues its credit cards itself, so card and loan complaints both go through HDFC Bank's grievance levels.

Before asking HDFC Bank to settle card dues: ask whether the dues can be converted into EMIs. This costs interest but avoids a "settled" remark. If you do ask for settlement, get the written offer first, pay only to the card account through official channels, and collect the closure or settlement letter and confirm the card is closed. For SBI cards (issued by SBI Card, a separate company), see the SBI guide.

No reply in 30 days, or a reply you don't accept? You can complain to the RBI Ombudsman. See the full complaint steps.

Recovery calls and paying a settlement

The RBI rules on recovery calls and the checks before you pay are the same for every bank. See help with recovery pressure, the RBI Ombudsman complaint guide and the settlement letter checklist.

Limits and risks

  • HDFC Bank decides whether to offer a lower EMI plan or a settlement. No one can promise a result.
  • Interest and charges may keep adding up while you talk to the bank.
  • A settled account usually shows as "settled" on your credit report. This can make future borrowing harder.
  • We are an independent consultancy. We are not HDFC Bank or its agent. We never collect settlement money. You pay only the bank.

Common Questions

What is the HDFC Bank loan settlement process?

Write to HDFC Bank explaining why you cannot pay, with proof. The bank checks your case under its own board-approved policy, as RBI's June 2023 rules allow. If it agrees, get the settlement letter first, pay only into the bank's official account, and then ask for a no-dues letter.

Can HDFC Bank credit card dues be settled?

The bank may offer an EMI plan or, if you are in real hardship, a settlement under its own policy. It does not have to. Ask in writing, and read our credit card settlement guide to know what to check before you agree.

How long does HDFC Bank take to answer a complaint?

HDFC Bank's grievance redressal page asks for up to 10 working days to resolve a Level 1 complaint. If it is not resolved, you can go to the Grievance Redressal Cell (Level 2) and then the Principal Nodal Officer (Level 3).

When can I go to the RBI Ombudsman?

First complain to the bank. If it does not reply within 30 days, or you do not accept its reply, you can complain free at cms.rbi.org.in within 90 days of the end of that period or the bank's last reply, whichever is later — if your lender is covered by RB-IOS 2026 (housing finance companies and smaller NBFCs are not). Complaints filed before 1 July 2026 stay under the 2021 scheme. See our [RBI Ombudsman complaint guide](/blog/rbi-ombudsman-complaint-guide).
