Quick answer: why this letter matters

A loan settlement request letter formally asks your bank or NBFC to consider closing your account for a reduced amount because of genuine hardship. It puts your situation on record, starts a written trail and moves the discussion to the lender's official channel. The lender alone decides whether to agree.

What is a loan settlement request letter?

A loan settlement request letter is a formal written request to your bank or NBFC, asking it to consider closing your loan or credit card account for a reduced amount, usually in one payment. It is how you officially say: "I am facing real hardship, and I want to resolve this account."

The lender alone decides whether to agree. Under RBI's June 2023 framework, each bank and NBFC follows its own Board-approved policy on compromise settlements. A well-prepared letter simply makes it easier for the lender to understand your case.

When do you need one?

A settlement request usually makes sense when:

  • You have lost your job, faced a medical emergency or had a big drop in income, and regular EMIs are no longer possible.
  • Your account is already overdue and recovery calls or notices have started.
  • You can arrange a realistic lump sum (ek saath payment) but cannot pay the full outstanding amount.
  • You want every discussion with the lender on record, in writing, instead of only on phone calls.

Why the letter matters: key benefits

A properly written request is not just a formality. It helps you in several ways:

  • Puts your hardship on record. Your reasons and documents are formally before the lender, with dates.
  • Starts a written trail. Proof of what you asked for, and when, protects you if there is a dispute later.
  • Asks for terms in writing. A good request asks the lender to confirm the amount, deadline, payment account and closure letter in writing before any money is paid.
  • Keeps you away from unofficial deals. It moves the talk to the lender's official channel, not an agent's personal number or UPI ID.
  • Shows good faith. It tells the lender you are not running away from the loan and want to resolve it.

What to expect after the request

Lenders take their own time to reply, and each follows its own Board-approved settlement policy. The lender may ask for more documents, make a counter-offer, suggest restructuring instead, or decline. Recovery calls may continue meanwhile, but they must still follow RBI's fair conduct rules, such as calls only between 8 AM and 7 PM.

If the lender agrees, it should give the settlement terms in writing on its letterhead before you pay. After payment, collect the closure letter or No Dues Certificate. A settled account is usually reported as "settled" on your credit report, and settlement does not improve your CIBIL score.

Common mistakes to avoid

Most problems with settlement requests come from a few avoidable mistakes:

  • Offering an amount you cannot actually pay.
  • Paying anything before the lender confirms the terms in writing.
  • Writing a long, emotional letter without dates or supporting documents.
  • Sending the letter in a way that leaves no proof of delivery.
  • Ignoring a legal notice while waiting for a reply. Deadlines in a notice keep running.

How our expert support team uses this letter to protect you

When you work with us, the Debt Support Expert Advocates Team reviews your case and prepares the request around your facts. In simple words, here is what we do:

  • Review your loan statements, notices and hardship documents to understand where the account stands.
  • Help you work out a realistic figure, based on what you can genuinely arrange.
  • Prepare a clear, factual request that puts your hardship on record and asks for written terms.
  • Advise on how to send it so you keep proof, and track the lender's reply.
  • Check any offer letter carefully before you pay, using points like those in our settlement letter checklist, and remind you to collect the closure letter or NOC afterwards.
  • Keep your borrower rights in view throughout, including RBI's rules on fair recovery conduct.

No one can promise that a lender will accept a settlement, and we never do. A settled account may also be reported as "settled" on your credit report, so we explain that before you decide. Read more on how personal loan settlement works and credit card settlement.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is there an official format for a loan settlement request letter?

No. RBI's settlement framework does not prescribe a format for a borrower's request. What matters is that it clearly identifies your account, explains your hardship with documents, states a realistic proposal and asks for the terms in writing.

Why don't you give a ready-made sample letter?

Because a generic template can miss facts that matter in your case or even weaken your position. Our expert support team prepares the request around your own loan, notices and hardship.

What are the benefits of sending a written settlement request?

It puts your hardship on record, creates a written trail, asks the lender for terms in writing before you pay, and keeps the discussion in the lender's official channel.

Should I pay anything before the bank replies?

No. Pay only after the lender confirms the settlement terms in writing, and pay only into the lender's own account.

How can Debt Support Expert help with my settlement request?

The Debt Support Expert Advocates Team reviews your documents, helps you set a realistic figure, prepares the request, guides you on sending it with proof and checks any offer before you pay. We are a consultancy, we never collect settlement money and the lender decides the outcome.
