RBI rules: read the RBI guidelines on loan settlement and recovery
  • Already in force: lenders and recovery agents must not call you for overdue loans before 8 AM or after 7 PM
  • Credit report correction not done within 30 days of your complaint? You get ₹100 for each day of delay
  • Recovery agents must not threaten, humiliate or harass you, your relatives, friends or co-workers
  • From 1 Jan 2027, banks must also tell you the recovery agency’s details at least one day before its first visit
  • From 1 Jan 2027, banks must list their recovery agencies on their website
  • Lenders agree settlements under their own Board-approved policy; it is not an automatic right
  • After a compromise settlement, lenders wait at least 12 months before lending to you again (non-farm loans)
  • No reply from your bank in 30 days, or unhappy with it? You can complain to the RBI Ombudsman at cms.rbi.org.in

NOC after loan settlement: what it is and how to get it

After you pay a settled amount, you need proof. Lenders usually call it a settlement letter, closure letter, no-dues certificate (NDC) or NOC.

In short

What the letter should say

  • Your name and loan or card account number
  • The amount agreed and the amount you paid, with dates
  • That the account is settled/closed and no further dues are payable under it
  • Signed by the lender, on letterhead or from an official email

See our full settlement letter checklist.

How to ask for it

  • Wait for your payment to reflect.
  • Write to the lender quoting the offer letter and payment receipt.
  • If there is no reply, escalate to the grievance officer, then the Principal Nodal Officer.
  • If there is still no reply after 30 days, complain at cms.rbi.org.in.

Secured loans

For a vehicle or home loan, also ask for your original documents back. For a vehicle, ask the lender to remove its name from your vehicle's RC, so the car is fully yours. Ask the lender what steps apply.

Keep it safely

Keep the letter and receipts for many years. You may need them for a credit report dispute or a future loan.

Quick answer

After you pay a settled amount, ask the lender for a written settlement or no-dues letter that confirms the account is closed under the settlement. For secured loans, RBI requires lenders to return original property documents and remove charges within 30 days of settlement, or pay ₹5,000 for each day of delay caused by them.

Real situations

Example: say you settled a car loan in August and the RC still shows the bank's hypothecation in October. Ask the lender in writing for the charge removal and the documents, quoting the 30-day rule.

Example: say an agent calls about a personal loan you settled last year. Your settlement letter and payment receipt are the answer; send copies to the lender's grievance officer.

A payment receipt is not the same as an NOC

A receipt only proves that a payment went through. It does not, by itself, prove that the loan is closed or that every settlement condition is done. Ask for a closure letter, settlement-completion letter or no-dues certificate that names you, the account, the amount paid and what remains payable — which should be nothing under a completed settlement.

The offer letter (what the lender agreed to accept) is also different from the completion letter (confirmation that you met those terms). Read both. A completed settlement is usually reported as "settled", not "closed". That reporting is often correct, not a bureau error.

If your credit report is still wrong after you have the letter

Write to the lender with the letter and your receipts and ask it to correct what it reports. If the mistake remains, raise a dispute with the credit bureau. Under RBI's 26 October 2023 framework (RBI/2023-24/72, in force from 26 April 2024), if a qualifying complaint about delayed or wrong credit-information updates is not resolved within 30 calendar days of filing, eligible complainants may receive ₹100 for each further calendar day of delay. It is not automatic for every dispute; the circular sets the conditions.

An NOC is useful proof for you. It is not a magic document that every new lender must see before giving you another loan, and it does not by itself raise your CIBIL score. Keep a copy with your receipts anyway — you may need it if an agent calls later about an account you already settled.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is a settlement letter the same as an NOC?

Not always. The settlement letter sets the amount and conditions. A completion letter or NOC confirms that those conditions have been met. Ask for written confirmation after you pay.

Does an NOC automatically improve my CIBIL score?

No. It can help you correct a wrong outstanding balance or status on your report. It does not raise your score by itself, and settlement does not improve CIBIL.
